Srak. Education. Empowerment.
Srak is a grassroots initiative empowering Afghan girls and women through home-based education and skill-building. Founded in 2021 in response to the nationwide school ban, Srak provides safe, accessible learning environments within homes and communities. We focus on literacy, digital skills, entrepreneurship, sewing, and the arts, helping women become confident, self-reliant, and economically active. Srak is more than education, it's a quiet movement of hope, dignity, and resilience.

About the Founder & CEO
Parasto Hakim is an Afghan activist and the founder of the SRAK Educational Association. (“Srak” is a Pashto word meaning “first light of the morning.”) She launched the organization in September 2021, shortly after the ban on girls’ education in Afghanistan, with the mission to create safe, home-based learning spaces for girls and women across the country.Despite being forced into exile for her advocacy, Parasto continues to lead SRAK, which now supports 35 underground schools with plans for further expansion. In 2023, she was nominated for the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, one of the European Union’s highest human rights honors. Parasto firmly believes that
“Even in the darkest moments, education must endure. No girl [anywhere in the world] should be denied her basic human rights, especially the right to learn. An educated girl is not a threat, and she should never be a target.”
